Conservative Treatment Options
What Types of Conservative Care Are Available?
At Edge Podiatry, our philosophy is to exhaust appropriate conservative treatment options before considering surgery. Most foot and ankle conditions can be successfully treated without surgical intervention.
Surgery is typically reserved for cases where conservative treatments have failed to provide adequate relief or when the severity of the condition makes surgical correction medically necessary. While surgery can be highly effective, every procedure carries inherent risks. Our goal is to help patients achieve pain relief, improved function, and a better quality of life using the least invasive treatment options whenever possible.
Every treatment plan is customized to the individual patient based on their diagnosis, symptoms, lifestyle, and long-term goals.
Conservative Treatment Options May Include:
Ankle Bracing
Custom and off-the-shelf braces can provide stability, reduce pain, support injured ligaments and tendons, and help prevent further injury.
Compression Dressings and Unna Boots
Compression therapy helps control swelling, improve circulation, and assist in the treatment of venous ulcers, lymphedema, and lower extremity wounds.
Custom Orthotics
Prescription orthotics are designed to improve foot function, correct abnormal biomechanics, reduce pain, and provide support for a variety of foot and ankle conditions.
Diabetic and Custom Footwear
Specialized footwear can help redistribute pressure, improve comfort, prevent ulcers, and accommodate foot deformities.
Physical Therapy
Physical therapy can improve strength, flexibility, balance, mobility, and recovery following injury or surgery.
Stretching and Exercise Programs
Targeted exercises may help relieve pain, improve flexibility, strengthen supporting muscles, and correct gait abnormalities.
Walking Boots and Immobilization
Walking boots can protect injured bones, tendons, and ligaments while allowing them to heal properly.
Anti-Inflammatory Medications (NSAIDs)
Medications may be recommended to reduce pain, inflammation, and swelling associated with many foot and ankle conditions.
Oral and Topical Medications
Prescription and over-the-counter medications may be used to treat infections, inflammation, fungal conditions, nerve pain, and other podiatric disorders.
Corticosteroid Injections
Injections can provide targeted relief for painful inflammatory conditions such as plantar fasciitis, arthritis, bursitis, and tendonitis.
Strapping, Padding, and Offloading
Specialized padding and taping techniques can relieve pressure, protect painful areas, and improve foot mechanics during healing.
Advanced Therapies
Depending on the condition, additional treatments such as laser therapy, regenerative medicine, wound care treatments, and other advanced modalities may be recommended.
Personalized Treatment Plans
No two patients are alike. Our physicians take the time to thoroughly evaluate each condition and develop an individualized treatment plan focused on relieving pain, restoring function, and helping patients return to the activities they enjoy.
If conservative treatment is no longer effective, we will discuss all available options and determine whether surgical intervention may be appropriate.
